What Is SILVERSHIELD® by BioLam™
BioLam™ is a patent pending thermal laminating film enhanced with antimicrobial protection, developed by a leading USA manufacturer of Laminating films.
Once applied to a printed item SILVERSHIELD® helps to prevent the spread of bacteria, molds, mildews and fungi.
Bacteria and other damaging microbes are present everywhere.
• The human mouth is home to more than 500 species of bacteria.
• One bacterium can reproduce a million times in just one hour.
• Some bacteria can survive on documents for months.
• One of the most common methods of spreading bacteria is through contact with a
contaminated surface.
• Hard or non-porous surfaces can be cleaned with disinfecting agents, such as bleach.
• Repeated cleanings are necessary for control.
• While frequent hand washing is the best defense to limit the spread of bacteria, many fail to perform this
task regularly.
• Printed documents and charts are frequently handled over and over.
• Items such as medical charts and menus are frequently used in environments where a hygienic

What is Antimicrobial Protection?
Antimicrobials are products that inhibit the growth and reproduction of damaging bacteria and mold. Unlike disinfectants, antimicrobials continue to work each time your document is exposed to bacteria. Disinfectants only kill the bacteria present at the time of cleaning.

Silver is a natural antimicrobial, unlike many manmade antimicrobials on the market. Silver is effective against the broadest range of bacteria. Silver is completely inorganic and has not been linked to the adaptive resistance seen with organic materials like antibiotics. The silver ion(Ag+) is bioactive and in sufficient concentration readily kills bacteria in vitro.
History of Silver Antimicrobial
Silver, the antimicrobial agent that is used in SILVERSHIELD® by BioLam has been used for centuries in medical applications and to protect various food products from spoilage. The earliest record of silver use was in 79 AD where it was used for long-term water storage.

• Studies have shown the antimicrobial agent in SILVERSHIELD® to be less toxic than table salt.
• The antimicrobial agent is EPA registered for a broad range of uses, including food and water contact.
• The antimicrobials are FDA listed under the FDA food contact substance notification in 21-CFR.
• It is listed on USDA list of non-food compounds for food processing plants.
